Xiaomi has overtaken American smartphone brand, Apple, to become the third biggest player in the industry.
International Data Corporation (IDC) has released a new report pertaining to the smartphone industry and device shipments in the third quarter of this year, i.e. Q3 2020. The report is quite revealing as it makes it bare that South Korean giant, Samsung, still maintains its hold the pole position as industry leader.
The report also revealed that the quarter saw a decline in smartphone shipments by about 1.3 percent year-on-year, which is actually better than was forecasted because of the on-going COVID-19 pandemic in which several countries were on lockdown for months.
Around 353.6 million smartphones were shipped in the third quarter of 2020 (July to September). The IDC had earlier predicted that there could be a 9 percent decline in smartphone shipments globally, but the turn out was rather that the numbers came out better than expected.
The report shows that Samsung is still number one even in this uncertain year of 2020, holding a 22.7 percent market share as the company managed to ship 80.4 million units in Q3 2020; and this number is indicative of a 2.9 percent growth for the company year-on-year (YoY).
Huawei ranks second as it shipped 51.9 million units, representing about 14.7 percent of the worldwide market share. In comparison with its performance last year (2019), the Chinese giant’s shipments declined by a massive 22 percent YoY.
While one Chinese market player experienced a significant decline, another witnessed tremendous growth. Xiaomi has blew Apple out of the way to become the third-largest smartphone brand in the world. It also went on to acquire a whooping 13.1 percent market share with 46.5 million shipments. YoY, Xiaomi witnessed a growth of 42 percent, mainly because of increased demand for low-end and mid-range smartphones, especially in developing countries like India, Ghana, Nigeria, Myanmar and others.
Apple and Vivo take the fourth and fifth positions with 11.8 percent and 8.9 percent market share, respectively. While Apple shipped 41.6 million units in Q3 2020, Chinese company Vivo shipped 31.5 million units.
