Tanzania to Grow Internet Penetration from 43% to 80% in 5 Years

President of Tanzania, John Magufuli has made a promise to his nation that his government would actively pursue the growth of Internet and mobile phone usage in the country over the next 5 years.

The President was speaking during the opening of the 12th Tanzanian Parliament since his re-election just last month. Mr. Magufuli stated that there is no way Tanzania can ignore the 4th Industrial Revolution (4IR) and it is a matter of necessity for the country to tap into it and derive the benefits thereof.

“Most of the activities around the world are now happening via communications technology. Tanzania has no choice but to be in step with these technological advancements,” President Magufuli said.

In line with this, over the next 5 years, by 2025, the government of Tanzania is seeking to the following steps to being it to fruition:

  • Increase Internet broadband access from 45% to 80%
  • Growth Internet usage from 43% to 80%
  • Grow mobile usage access across the country
  • Set up post codes throughout the country
  • Increase cyber security efforts
  • Prioritize ICT innovation in the country

Tanzania currently ranks as one of the top 10 wealthiest economies in Africa. Recent efforts to support and grow the ICT and technology sector in general, is expected to see to it that more Tanzanians get easy and ready access to digital services and further improve their lives and ultimately the country’s economy over the next 5 years.
