Accra, Ghana – The sitting President of the Republic of Ghana, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo was acclaimed as the flag bearer of the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP) for the upcoming December elections a few minutes ago at a special meeting convened at Alisa Hotel in Accra.
The acclamation was done by the party’s National Council at a meeting that is being held under special circumstances due to the current world corona virus pandemic. The usual event was to hold a national congress and big rally at a much larger venue. But due to the need to adhere to social distancing measures, there have been fewer people than normal at the Alisa Hotel event, and it is expected to not last as long as a normal congress would.
This declaration by the NPP of Mr. Akufo Addo comes as no surprise since this has been the NPP’s tradition to not challenge a sitting president’s bid for “flag bearership” within the party as was witnessed in the case of John Agyekum Kuffour in 2004. So, even before the acclamation, all of Ghana knew that this year’s election would be another two-horse race between the NPP and NDC with the well-known faces of Nana Akufo Addo and John Dramani Mahama’s National Democratic Congress (NDC) facing off once again for the third time.
Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia Chosen as Running Mate
Vice President, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has once again be nominated by Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo and also acclaimed by the NPP party for the third time running. Dr. Bawumia then went on to give an acceptance speech of the position of running mate. The current Vice President has been a burst of excitement since his introduction on the political scene in 2008 and he seems to bring much excitement anytime he wears his political hat.
This year’s election promises to be another exciting one as is usually the case in Ghana. It is however yet unknown how much impact the social distancing rules and restricted gathering directives would have on the campaigning and electioneering process for 2020.
