The flag bearer of the leading opposition party in Ghana, the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama just outdoored Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate for the upcoming December elections.
In the just ended program at the University of Professional Studies (UPS) held for the occasion, Mr. Mahama used the event to not only present the party’s first female on the presidential ticket, but he also went further to make known to the world the many pluses and competencies she brings to the position.
Mr. Mahama during his address mentioned that his choice had been widely accepted by the rank and file of the party and he said that makes him confident of the party’s victory in the upcoming polls in December. He adds that Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang is the best choice for Vice Presidency in the country today
“The NDC remains the most successful political party in the history of Ghana. We have won four out of seven of the elections in the fourth republic. And in December God wiling, we will win our fifth election,” Former President Mahama said.
John Mahama went on to mention that the NDC has been the first political party to appoint women in many firsts, such as the first Woman Speaker of Parliament, the first Woman Minister of Finance, the First Woman Head of the National Centre for Civic Education (NCCE) among others.
He says that unlike the ruling party the NPP, the NDC truly believed that women are top performers who should be put at the fore of leadership in the nation.
Mr. Mahama said that not only will Professor Opoku Agyemang be useful in administering the affairs of state as Vice President, but also she brings a lot by way of electoral fortunes to the party considering that women make up the majority of the Ghanaian population.
He mentioned his running mate’s endless achievements as Minister of Education under his first term as president and also went on to mention her other achievements outside of politics.
Mr. Mahama recalled that after his announcement of Professor. Jane Naaana Opoku-Agyemang as his running mate, many leading figures in the NPP launched a barrage of attacks on the person of the good professor, many coming from places of unbridled misogyny. He made it known that such gender based attacks were repulsive and not what a “highly distressed nation current needs”
“We will change the face of our politics so that no one would be considered more Ghanaian or less Ghanaian than the other, on the basis of the ownership of a political party card,” Mr. Mahama added.
Professor Jane Opoku-Agyemang took over the podium to thank Mr. John Dramani Mahama for the many accolades her bestowed on her and also acknowledged the attestations of other speakers as well.
She thanked the flag bearer and the rank and file of the NDC for deeming her fit to occupy the seat of Vice President. She promised to do her best to see to it that her party wins the elections so that they are able to execute the many progressive policies they have for the people of Ghana.
The second half of 2020 marks the beginning of the political season for Ghanaians as the country goes into full gear to select the next government on the 7th of December.
