Chelsea were the King makers last night as they beat Manchester City 2 goals to 1 to handover the English Premiership title to Liverpool, making it the Merseyside team Champions of England for the first time in 30 long years. Liverpool practically won the Premiership title without having to kick a ball. So significant is the event that the English Premier League official Twitter account had to dedicate a special tweet to the occasion. The tweet reads; “Liverpool have now been crowned champions of England in eight different decades. More than any other club.”
It was an exciting night at Stamford Bridge in London as the “Roman Army” saw off Pep Guardiola’s side in a spectacular display. Chelsea was returning to their home grounds for a competitive fixture for the first time since March after the league took a break due to the Corona virus pandemic.
In the first half of the match, Chelsea came close to scoring after Willian sent in a near perfect cross from the corner line into the eighteen yard box, and his team mate Cesar Azpilicueta connected with it to head goal ward, but Manchester City’s goal keeper came to the rescue.
Ten minutes before half time, Christian Pulisic ran with the ball from Chelsea’s half in a counter attack all the way into Manchester’s City’s box placing the ball in the lower right hand corner of the net after beating Ederson to a one-on-one, giving Chelsea the lead.
In the early parts of the second half, Manchester City equalized via Kevin De Bruyne’s well struck kick after Chelsea conceded a foul close to their penalty box – this adds one more to the tally of the many times De Bruyne has scored against his former club.
Manchester City seemed to have improved their game as they came close to taking the lead many times with Raheem Sterling missing narrowly at point when he struck the lower arm of the left post. This was a counter attack situation of some sort and Sterling had Mahrez free to his right who he could have passed to for a better shot at goal, but he chose to go for it all by himself.
Chelsea created many chances one of which Mount had a close shot at goal but missed narrowly hitting the side of the net. Another attempt by Christian Pulisic was cleared just off the line by Manchester City defender Kyle Walker.
A goal mouth scramble in City’s box with Chelsea almost adding one more to the scores saw a handball situation where Fernandinho cleared the ball with his hand, causing him to receive a red card and conceding a penalty against his team.
Willian stepped up to the plate and scored the perfect penalty by making a placement at the top left had corner of the net, sending the keeper wide in the wrong direction. This was eventually the goal that won Chelsea the game of the night and crowned Liverpool Champions of England.
Celebrations at Liverpool
Minutes to the end of the Chelsea versus Manchester City game, Liverpool fans began to gather in their thousands at Liverpool’s stadium at Anfield, with celebrations going wild after the final whistle. Police made no attempt to disperse the crowd since the mood was quite understandable. It has been an agonizing 30 -year wait for the city to claim the English trophy.
Liverpool plays Manchester City next on the 2nd of July at the Etihad Stadium, and it is yet unclear if they will be given the league trophy there or if they will prefer that the handing over ceremony be done during their next match at Anfield.
