Ibadan, Nigeria – Oba Lamidi Olayiwola Adeyemi the Alaafin of Oyo, on Monday said that he believes that the failure of Mr. Muhammadu Buhari to address the young people who were protesting against the police brutality was a major contributor to the lives that were lost in protests and the subsequent destruction of properties.
The Alaafin, was speaking during a stakeholders meeting that was held at the House of Chiefs, the Parliament Building Agodi Secretariat Ibadan, the Oyo State Capital, stressed that, if the Mr. Buhari had taken it upon himself to properly address the issues that were being raised and had done so at the appropriate time, the situation would have seen a better outcome as whole.
The meeting was purposely organised by the Seyi Makinde, the Governor of Oyo State to bring leaders and stakeholders together so they can together chart a way forward on the demands of the END SARS protesters. The Governor himself was in attendance as well as his Deputy, Engr. Rauf Olaniyan, the Deputy Inspector General of Police, DIG Leye Oyebade, the State Commissioner for Police, CP. Joe Nwachukwu Enwonwu, the Garrison Commander of the Two Division of the Nigeria Army, Barrister General. Soji Ogunsugba.
Oba Adeyemi, in his speech, said, what was witnessed at the meeting should be the beginning of a new dawn. A dawn that is very different from the one recent “failure of the authority to rise to the occasion that led to the loss of lives and destructions of properties that we witnessed aftermath of the ENDSARS protests.”
Alaafin stressed that “the youth have been denied of their rights, the peaceful protest of the youths have showed us the elders what we are lacking, they showed us through the protests that they are well organized, they have shown us comportment, they organized the protests to the amazement of all of us.”
